Associative
I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people… 1 Corinthians 5:9
This is certainly a verse that can be taken out of context very easily - pinpointing how we should avoid the sexually immoral (which, in todays modern world would really mean locking ourselves away into a monastery), but reading on it becomes clearer what it really means - that we shouldn’t associate with those who call themselves our brothers but have taken the ball and run with it in the completely opposite way, telling us it’s okay to be sexually immoral.
Jesus never did disassociate himself from the sexually immoral. What he did was show them love and compassion, a disposition that would rather see them saved than continually giving themselves over to their desires. Rather than cut ourselves off, we should be there with them through life while standing on the principles that God has given to us, so that we may be reflectors, beacons of righteousness and wise choices.
